With the increasing adoption of Cloud services be it from infrastructure to Function as a service/Serverless the question always arises if really java is a good fit. Especially that the startup time of a java application is long compared to other languages.

The first production ready version of GraalVM came out to light last May, which is a polyglot virtual machine for not only jvm based languages (Java, Scala, Kotlin ... etc) but also for Javascript, python, Ruby, R and LLVM languages. Which makes interoperability between those languages possible.

One of the most important capabilities GraalVM provides us is native-image (currently available as an early adopter) which has a really fast startup time and minimal memory footprint which is beneficial for cloud native environment. Many frameworks started already adopting GraalVM like Micronaut.

In this session I will introduce GraalVM and its features, compare JIT, AOT compilation modes of GraalVM, as well as licensing. We will also go through a practical demo of GraalVM based on Micronaut and show what’s possible to be applied today.
